oh simple thing, where have you gone

Had a pretty busy weekend. But first I must point out that I've been disappointed twice by the so-called hip Roxy Blu. Last weekend I did not see any breakers as Naomi promised. And this past weekend DJ Jazzy Jeff did not appear, as Naomi hyped nonstop for 1 week. I'm sensing a pattern here - first Russell Peters, then DJ Jazzy Jeff...I feel I have the right to blame Naomi for many disappointing nights of 2005 ;) PLUS she bailed on me!!

I guess it's all right because Friday night ended up being a good night. Had dinner at an authentic French restaurant where I finally got to meet meet Galen & Dinesh's famous Granny! And instead of dancing at Roxy Blu, we spent the night talking with the always interesting (& blunt) Hedy leading the conversation. I was dead tired already even before dinner time so I can't remember too much of the details but I remember it being a heady (haha) discussion.

Spent Saturday at the Ontario Science Centre. It was sweet cuz admission was free & parking was free when we discovered Erica's pass still worked! Going to the science centre has always been exciting for me and this time was no exception. What was a bonus was when we discovered there was a public forum on the legalization of marijuana. At first we weren't going to go but then Kiyomi & I saw that Dr. Kalant (the guy who wrote our pharmacology text) Dr. Uetrecht (Santa!) were part of the panel of experts! So we went to the forum and ended up staying the entire duration of the discussion, which was about 2 hours. It was a good, mentally stimulating day.

Sunday was the Keane concert. Normally I get really excited about concerts. But even during the day yesterday I wasn't that excited. I guess deep down I knew I had lost Keane to the world..haha. The fact that they appeared on SNL a couple of weekends ago is a testament to their fast rise to popularity. Anyway, I was right to not get excited about the concert because it was definitely the WORST one I've been to. Don't be mistaken; the band was great. But the crowd SUCKED ASS. I could not believe how bad the crowd was. Not only that, we were surrounded by these young kids who wouldn't let others get to the front, which is perfectly fine if you love the band because you deserve that spot since you did get in line first. However, these dumb JoJos weren't even that into the performance! They didn't move at all and they sang along only to their big single, "Somewhere Only We Know." WTF. That was annoying. There were a lot of other annoying things:

-we arrived 1 hour before doors open and we were surprisingly far from the door
-these 2 British Bitches pushed their way into the crowd for The Zutons and complained about how they must be in the front because, "No one here knows about The Zutons...no wonder the music scene here sucks." WTF. (BTW, The Zutons were pretty cool...they have some pretty catchy tunes...that guitar player seems really mysterious...and Abi the sax player was rockin')
-the Grade 7 girls behind Wendy kept wanting to push her yet they also did not know any other song except "Somewhere Only We Know."
-the first opening band, The RedWalls were just annoying in general. Please don't wear sunglasses indoors; it's not cool. Also, every single song they played sounded like a cover song.

At least they played "Bedshaped" and 3 new songs. I like how they ended the show (pre-encore) with their single. By that point, at least some of the kiddies surrounding me seemed to be into the concert, but that's probably because that was the only song they knew. I should mention that there weren't just little kids. In fact, this was probably the most mixed group of people I've seen at a concert, even more so than k-os. There were older people too; I'm sure Mix99.9 had something to do with that. Anyway, during the encore, Wendy, Janicec & I were screaming for them to play "Bedshaped" and we really impressed the 2 British (i think they were, anyway) guys in front of us. They turned around and laughed. I'm sure we were the loudest ones, once again. In fact, as we discussed during the car ride home, we felt we had to scream extra because the crowd just wasn't giving the band the loving they deserved. BOOO.

I have concluded that the concerts I go to will either have to be at small clubs & venues or at large stadiums. I can't do this in-between thing. At the small clubs, you know the band's usually not popular enough to attract annoying band-wagon jumpers. At the large stadiums, you expect the annoying people but the band's become so popular, you just have to appreciate their success and scream along with the massive crowd. My only exception is for Snow Patrol when they come. I MUST see them so I don't think I have a choice but to return to the Kool Haus.

You know what was one of the few highlights of that evening...the part when we went into that promo van, and got those Keane/Snow Patrol stickers...and how the teeny asked the dude, and he said they weren't free, and that they were a dollar each. That was funny.

And The Zutons' album is FREAKING amazing. I would totally see them again.
